Caleb Strawn, James Street Featured in Duke Law Magazine

Robinson Bradshaw attorneys and recent Duke Law graduates Caleb Strawn and James Street were profiled in Duke Law Magazine for their involvement with the school’s Community Enterprise Clinic.

Strawn was responsible for guiding a clinic client in launching a nonprofit organization, Harper’s Home. Founded by a Durham mother whose daughter received treatment at Duke Children’s Hospital for leukemia, the organization aims to provide housing, comfort and stability to families who travel long distances to Durham to receive similar care. Strawn drafted articles of incorporation and bylaws, prepared applications to receive tax-exempt status from the IRS and a charitable solicitation license from the state, and wrote a memo on real estate transaction structures to allow the client’s family to stay in their home while using part of their lot for the nonprofit’s cottages.

Street led a project involving the Triangle Land Conservancy, a North Carolina nonprofit that “fights Black land loss by helping BIPOC and other historically disadvantaged populations acquire farmland through its Good Ground Initiative.” Street counseled the group on limiting its legal risk and ensuring compliance with federal and state laws, including developing criteria for choosing applicants for land ownership without discrimination.
